Debt talks collapse, Republicans walk out over taxes

2011-06-24 02:48:55 GMT

US-originated budget negotiations collapsed Thursday after the Republican negotiators, the doubts about Washington's ability to reach an agreement that the government allow it to keep borrowing money and get you avoid a debt default.

Representative Eric Cantor, the No. 2 Republican in the House of Representatives, said the participants identified billions of dollars in potential spending cuts, but were blocked tax increases sought by Democrats. Republican Senator Jon Kyl also removed as a collaborator.

"Whatever progress has been made, the tax issue is resolved before talks can continue," Cantor said in a statement.

House Speaker John Boehner, the top Republicans in Washington, said Democrats need to make tax increases on the table.

"These talks can be continued if they accept higher taxes in the conversation," said Boehner.

The negotiators had hoped to reach an agreement on the budget next week that would give political cover for lawmakers to get the maximum $ 14.3 trillion in debt before the Treasury short of cash to invoices in the country raise.

Default could occur if Congress does not act second August urge the U.S. into a recession and sending markets plunging around the world.

So far this has not affected the bond markets, investors go to other new focus and the fact that Washington eventually reached an agreement. But that probably will not come until the last minute, according to analysts.

The talks were "not dead but are alive," said Greg Valliere, political analyst for the Investor on the Potomac Research Group. "It will be ugly for the next few weeks."

Not necessarily REACH

Vice President Joe Biden was still expected to Capitol Hill on Thursday to meet with other Democrats now that the two Republican members of his group, deficit reduction will be increased.

The failure of the negotiations does not mean that a business is out of reach. Participants were expected to Boehner and President Barack Obama to handle the final negotiations - a move which can now be made earlier than expected.

Cantor had little signs that the talks may go to a wall. With after the meeting, he said he looked forward to talks on Thursday and Friday and said the group has made progress.

"Of course, if we were not, we would not see us again," he said.

Withdrawal is caught surprised Democrats when Obama met with House Democratic leaders at the White House before the session of the talks in the afternoon.

"Until our Republican colleagues are more concerned about our need to reduce the deficit than what has to say Grover Norquist, have to be reduced, we have a difficult time," said Rep. Chris Van Hollen, a prominent activist on the anti- control.

The Republicans have from the beginning that any tax increase will not go through the house, said. But the Democrats thought flexibility could be possible, after Senate Republicans voted for a tax break for ethanol in the vicinity of the last week, defying Norquist and other anti-tax activists.

In recent sessions, the Democrats have prompted a wide range of tax breaks, subsidies for oil and gas breaks that benefit wealthy individuals to close. Negotiators reached a tentative agreement on cuts in health, annual expenditures, other benefits such as subsidies for agriculture and supporting education and automatic limitation of the future expenditure by an employee with the discussions. But the Democrats would not turn over taxes, with words.

Republicans could not vote

Republicans may not have enough votes to enter the agreement into the house in any case, as many newly elected conservatives feel little inclination to compromise.

This means that Boehner may need to rely on Democratic votes, and Democrats insist that tax increases should be part of the agreement, said a member.

"I think we are gone, unless there are some farmers' incomes," said Democratic Representative Allyson Schwartz at a lunch with the Third Way, a centrist think tank instead. "It is to do take a bipartisan effort. This is something the Republicans need to recognize, and we are not there yet."

The decision to leave the talks can buy an effort, a certain latitude in his right side, said one analyst.

"I hope Cantor, so that the talks are trying only to consolidate his reputation with the firebrands in the House, in fact, an agreement," Cary Leahey, managing director of Decision Economics said in New York.

Cantor and Boehner, it may be necessary to deny a debt ceiling vote before you can write a compromise budget expert Stan Collender said leave. This could be similar to a jolt, the markets like the 2008 banking bailout vote could be what the Dow Jones Industrial Average up 800 points.

"It is perhaps a negative market reaction to the vote for the Republicans to move from their current position," said Collender, a budget analyst at Qorvis Communications.

A Democratic colleague said Cantor acknowledged that tax increases will ultimately be part of an agreement, but he would not be the one to tell.

"Cantor just thrown the bus Boehner," with words.

They arguably have a squad with more quiltay than any of their main relegation rivals. In the likes the Shaun Wright-Phillips, Adel Taarabt, Bobby Zamora, Jamie Mackie, Taye Taiwo and Joey Barton, they have quiltay their relegation rivals Bolton, Wigan, Wolves and Blackburn can only dream of. But this team looks good only on paper at the moment. Recent results show that only having big name players will hardly do the job on the pitch. New signings are yet to settle in and get used to the style of play. Even the manager, who is new, has so far failed to transmit the ideas he has to the players. This team is more than capable of moving up the table but only if the new players can adapt to their new surroundings. The recent comeback victory against Liverpool would have done them a world of good but there is still a lot of work to be done. Therefore, Mark Hughes will need to find a formula to make this team gel and if they do there is every chance Loftus Road fans will be treated to Premier League football next season.
