Helicopter crashes into East River, a Dead

A helicopter crashed into the East River off 34th Street in Manhattan on Tuesday afternoon, causing one death and sending others to local hospitals.
The crash happened around 3:22 p.m., shortly after the helicopter took off from the 34th Street helipad. Crews at the site of the helicopter lifted from the water Tuesday night and were able to get a recovery boat.

The passengers were family friends of the pilot, Paul Dudley. Among them were Paul and Harriet Nicholson, a British couple who lives in Portugal. In addition, Harriet Nicholson 's daughter, Sonia Marra, and her Australian friend, Helen Tamaki, were also passengers - were both living in Sydney.
Marra died at the scene. She was apparently trapped inside the helicopter for about one hour and half before the rescue services were able to visit her. The remaining two women were rushed to Bellevue Hospital - one with a cardiac arrest and respiratory arrest in the other. Paul Nicholson was taken to NYU Medical Center and released.

Dudley was able to clear of the wreck, and swimming was treated at the scene. He has been an initial interview with the NTSB investigators.
The NTSB also plans to u200b u200bgrondige look at the helicopter to take and do a thorough interview with the pilot to determine mechanical versus human error. They said they will look at training Dudley, all previous accidents and other factors.
Dudley is a commercial pilot and owner of Linden Airport Services. The company manages the Linden Municipal Airport in New Jersey. In 2006, Dudley landed a Cessna aircraft in a park near Coney Island Brooklyn after the engine failed. No one was injured in that crash landing.

Dozens of aid workers risked their lives to save others Tuesday and were saddened by the precious life that was lost. NYPD Emergency Service Units and FDNY rescue workers knew their window to rescue the survivors were quickly closed and some officers even jumped in, in full regalia.

Earlier in the evening, CBS 2 Chris Wragge spoke to Robert Dress eyewitness, who said he was close with his son to watch helicopters take off.
Dress said the helicopter was , swirling as it was in trouble, , adding that , once you realize that something is wrong, just went down.
It was the upside-down, Dress said adding that the helicopter not break apart. He said he responded by running away from the scene and call 911 and added that the response from officials was , very fast.
CBS 2 's Derrick Dennis spoke with another witness who saw the helicopter crashed shortly after. That witness said he saw the helicopter dipping begin to float on the River.
He said he saw two men clinging to the sinking chopper , screaming for help. He said that by the time authorities arrived at the scene, the helicopter was completely immersed , upside-down.
